Being Great With Everyone

August 25th, 2008

Have you noticed how easy it is to be wonderful with the people you meet at church, temple or mosque? You want to be great with those people with whom you share the same beliefs–because usually those beliefs are about being kind, gentle and loving, abd you want to be seen as a kind, loving and gentle person. And then the people you come into contact with every day–it’s not always so easy to be great. The ones that you wash the dishes with, or make the bed with, or share a project with….those people are not always so easy to rub along with.

And yet, those are the very ones we should be great with. Because those people are actually in our lives on a more regular basis. I guess it’s the old saying, ‘familiarity breeds contempt.’ We often do better with strangers than with our own family, friends and co-workers. So here’s what to do if you want to change things around and be great with everyone.

1. Write an email to someone who is close to you and tell them how great they are.

2. Go to someone that you work with and tell them how much you appreciate what they do.

3. Do something thoughtful for someone–like get your co-worker a cup of coffee or a glass of water (assuming thats their beverage of choice) and just pop it on their desk.

4. Plan a surprise meal for someone special.

5. Start a gratitude journal and write down all the things you are grateful for.
