To Be Happy, Make Others Happy
September 25th, 2007
I was talking to a friend last night who had worked with Clement Stone (founder of AON Insurance companies). He said that Clement always used to say, “To be happy you have to make other people happy.”
This makes so much sense to me. Not only that, it takes us out of the “me, me, me” way of thinking. It brushes aside the introspective way of being, where everything is about how we feel, and how others make us feel.
Making others happy shows us a different way of being because in order to make other people happy we have to listen to their needs, search for ways to make others comfortable, and actually practice the Golden Rule.
Just for today, experiment. Just for today search for ways to make other people happy and at the end of the day, see how it made you feel. Jot down some notes about it so that next time you are feeling low, and miserable, you will remember, that it only takes a moment to make others happy, but the residual affect of happiness within yourself may well last for ever.
