When a Loved One is Sick
October 27th, 2006
We had just said goodbye to Doris, Jeff’s mom, and put her on the plane back to the UK. That was Saturday. We called on Sunday to check she had arrived safely and heard her say, ”Yes I had no problem. Everything was on time…” Tuesday morning 4:00 am the phone is ringing. It’s Jeff’s sister to tell us that mom has suffered a massive stroke and is in hospital. Today is Friday and we are flying over to see her. Jeff, me and our two daughters, 33 and 34 years old.
It’s like gathering strength to give strength. His mom is paralyzed down her right side and isn’t doing well. This is one of the hardest things about living in a different country from the family. We are not directly on hand to help. Doris comes over each year for 6 weeks and we see other relatives often but it’s not like being round the corner ready to step in at a moments notice. That being said, I am now looking for the very best outcome for this situation. Because I always have a choice.
So here’s my wish for Doris. She’s 80 years old and has had a great life. She was so happy to be with us, playing with her great grandchildren, going out to dinner, seeing old friends, and now what I wish for her is to be pain-free, feeling at peace and remembering all the good deeds she has done throughout her life. I wish for the very best outcome for all concerned and then leave it in the hands of a higher power to work out the details.
For myself, I want to be the best I can be for everyone involved. Speak when I need to speak, be silent when I need to be silent. Thank you for reading this and if you wish, it would be great to send love and peace to anyone you feel may need it at this time. Val
I’ve just read what Val wrote and wanted to add my thoughts.
Tragedy puts into perspective my life. It quickly dispels all of my petty concerns and problems and makes me more determined than ever to have a complete, fulfilled and happy life, with all its ups and downs. And that today is the only real day I’ve got to make a difference. To come from joy and happiness and to remember how amazing I am as a human being. Rock N Roll Jeff
